Angelos Dynasty

Angelos Dynasty
Ruled Byzantium (q.v.) from 1185-1204. The family came from obscure origins, but they advanced when Constantine Angelos married the younger daughter of Alexios I Komnenos (q.v.). After that, their family's ascent was assured, culminating in three successive emperors, Isaac II, Alexios III, and Alexios IV (qq.v.). Hardly "angels," as their family name suggests, they might at least have been competent leaders. Especially serious were the numerous regional rebellions that went unchecked (e.g., the rebellion of Isaac Komnenos in Cyprus [qq.v.]). The Fourth Crusade (q.v.) can be viewed as the culmination of a process of political fragmentation to which the Angelos dynasty contributed.
